About the study

Led by Dr. Juliet Lumati from Northwestern University as the principal investigator and Dr. Chineye Iwuji as the co-investigator at Lakeshore Cancer Center, the study is designed to assess the efficacy of a financial navigation program for patients diagnosed with breast, colorectal, or prostate cancer. Financial navigation is a service designed to assist patients in preparing for the financial implications of their cancer treatment, identifying financial aid, and maximizing their insurance benefits. The study will compare the outcomes of patients who receive financial navigation with those who receive routine care.

Eligibility Requirement

You can participate if you meet the following criteria:

  1. You are 18 years or older
  2. You have a new diagnosis of breast, colorectal, or prostate cancer within 6 weeks
  3. You present to Lakeshore Cancer Center for treatment
  4. You provide informed consent to participate in the study

Why is this study important?

Cancer treatment can be very expensive, especially in Nigeria where most patients pay out of pocket and have no insurance. This can lead to financial hardship, stress, and reduced quality of life for patients and their families. It can also affect the quality and outcomes of cancer care, as some patients may delay, interrupt, or skip their recommended treatments due to financial barriers. This study will evaluate if financial navigation can help patients avoid financial catastrophe, reduce financial distress, and improve treatment adherence.

Why join the study?

By participating, you will have the chance to receive financial navigation services FREE OF CHARGE. This service may help you reduce your risk of financial distress and associated treatment costs while improving your access to care. There are no known risks or harms in participation. Your privacy and confidentiality will be protected at all times, and you can withdraw at any time without penalty or loss of benefits. Participants may receive compensation in the form of phone credit.

Additionally, you will help us contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge in this area and the improvement of cancer care and health outcomes for patients in Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African countries.

What happens if I participate?

If you agree to participate in this study, you will be randomly assigned to either the treatment group or the control group. If you are in the treatment group, you will receive financial navigation services from a trained financial navigator who will help you with your financial needs and concerns related to your cancer treatment. If you are in the control group, you will receive routine care with a research assistant. As part of the study, we will have access to your medical records, and you will be asked to complete a brief 10-minute survey regarding your social and financial background at different time points throughout the study.
